How to resolve a very common problem that a lot of dog owners have and that is your dog jumping on your visitors when they come over to your home now there are basically two different ways to resolve this one is prevent the behavior from occurring and then teach the dog to do something else besides jumping the other method is let the dog jump and then provide some type of unwanted consequence for the behavior both of them work what I'm going to be showing you today however is the first method so what I'm going to show you is how to stop a dog from jumping immediately by preventing it and then if you want to take it a step further how to teach your dog to go to a dog bed in the home rather than be crowding the door when your guests come yet now the first thing that you're going to need is what I call a tether and our tether is just I have a coated wire here you could also use your dog's leash and what we do is we tie it to something in the home.
How to Stop a Dog From Jumping On the Counter?
I have an eye hook here because I use the tether often you could tie it around a heavy piece of furniture or a doorknob but it is usually best if the tether is tied low to the ground that it helps the dog from getting tangled in it so what I'm gonna do now is I'm going to go ahead and show you a video clip of us working with a dog and that has the propensity to jump How do I get my dog to stop jumping on the counter? all over the guests when they come in the door so let's go ahead and roll that clip now the first step in the tether method is to prevent all unwanted jumping on your guests from occurring you should have your tether ready before you have visitors to your home in this articel I'm just using a regular dog leash when your guest knocks on the door you will lead your dog to the tether and attach the tether to your dog's collar once your dog is tethered you can give your visitor your full attention you also don't have to worry about giving your guests instructions on how they should be interacting with your dog as you can see in the articel the dog is very friendly but also super excited and would no doubt be jumping all over my visitor at this point but because the dog is tethered he is unable to jump and participate in any unwanted behavior it can be very difficult to control an untrained hyperactive dog and try to talk to your visitors at the same time and another added benefit of the tether is that.
It keeps your visitors unintentionally reinforcing bad behavior such as petting and talking to the dog while they are dumping on them okay so now you know how the tethering process works now you could stop there depending on your dog's behavior around people and what I mean by that is that you could just tented the dog for a few minutes let your dog calm down and then take the dog off the tether and see how they do if your dog still has a tendency to jump however then you may want to go to the next step which is teaching the dog to do something else and I'm going to go ahead and show you a articel of what we did with this particular dog and we taught him to go to a dog bed stay there until we release him off the bed and I will go ahead and put a link up in the description to the articel that will show you how to teach your dog to go to our dog bed and stay there okay that's it for today I will see you in another articel this articel is after two weeks of training I have been training the dog to go to the dog bed using the command place you will need to practice with your dog often to be able to depend on it when you actually have a visitor to your home I'm not saying training this command is easy and some dogs are harder than others but if you practice this exercise you will learn how to control your dog in a lot of other situations besides just when you have visitors.
